A vision is a compelling picture of the future with reasons why people should strive to create that future.
Vision serves three important purposes:
- It sets and clarifies the general direction for change
- It motivates people to take action in the right direction
- It helps to coordinate the actions of large numbers of different people
Urgency and alignment are necessary elements for successful change, but they are not enough. A sensible and clearly articulated vision plays a key role in producing change by directing, aligning, and inspiring actions.
Developing a vision goes hand-in-hand with developing the plan for executing change. Together they form a roadmap for the change journey that assists urgency and alignment and serves as a powerful communication mechanism.
